WEYMOUTH is to be brightened up with a splash of colour thanks to a new mural artwork trail.

The town council has confirmed that a new public art project is to go ahead and will be asking residents for suggestions.

The project is to be carried out as part of a partnership between the council and We Are Weymouth, with a proposed completion date of July next year.

The trail will attract and engage with a wide range of Weymouth residents and visitors to explore artworks inspired by local history and culture. Artists will enhance the look and feel of existing buildings adding colour and design to bring an accessible, free walking trail that will promote the cultural development of Weymouth, providing physical and mental well-being and enjoyment to all.

It will also encourage people to explore the town helping to increase footfall and economic benefit for local businesses following the pandemic.

As well as being able to email ideas to the council, a public event is also being held at a stand in the town centre by the New Look building on St. Thomas Street on Thursday August 26 from 10am – 12pm.

Representatives will be there to explain more about the trail and take peoples’ mural trail ideas.

A Weymouth Town Council spokesperson said: "The council and We Are Weymouth want to make sure that we get the right subject matter and design for the murals and deliver something that the public will appreciate, enjoy, and have a sense of pride over having in their town.

"We want to hear from you to help us design the artworks. Your memories, stories and ideas will help inform and shape the artist’s designs.

Your ideas will need to have a link to Weymouth and be family friendly. This could include Weymouth history and heritage, links to the sea and seaside, the environment and landscape, local wildlife, etc."

Do you have any ideas or history that links to one of the proposed mural locations?

They are as follows:

  •  Overcombe
  •  Hope Square
  •  Greenhill Gardens
  •  Weymouth Harbour / Town Bridge
  •  Weymouth Beach
  •  Stone Pier
  •  Great George Street
  •  Nothe Gardens
  •  St Thomas Street

"The mural trail is planned to be delivered next year (subject to our planning application) and be finished by July 2022," the council's spokesperson added.

"Once completed there will be a trail map to guide participants and learn more about the amazing artworks. There will also be further community engagement activities in May/June next year - watch this space."
