TWO events are set to take place later this year for lovers of plants and the outdoors.

Mapperton House and Gardens near Beaminster will be hosting the events this autumn.

Mapperton’s Autumn Plant Fair will take place on Sunday, September 19.

One of the largest events of its kind in Dorset, the plant fair sees men and women from all over the region selling a wide range of plants, trees and shrubs, as well as garden accessories.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Save the Children, a national charity with an aim to ensure all children reach their full potential, regardless of their situation.

The event runs from 10am to 4pm with entry costing £5 per person, which includes entry to the Mapperton Gardens.

The gardens will also play host to a guided walk in which visitors will be educated on the estate’s rewilding project to support biodiversity and ecosystem recovery.

More environmentally-friendly farming and land management regimes are gradually being implemented, while some areas are being left to allow natural processes to shape the future landscape.

The walk will take place on Sunday, September 12 and will be led by ecologist Dr Tom Brereton.

The morning walk will discover the flora and fauna that is already beginning to flourish and walkers can expect to see the herd of White Park cattle, one of the country’s oldest native breeds.

Tickets for the walk are £20 per person and will include coffee, cake and biscuits at Mapperton’s Coach House café.

Mapperton, the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, was named both the garden of the year and the nation's finest manor house in 2020.

The manor house also appeared on the small screen last year as the backdrop for a Netflix series based on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca

Members of public will also be given the chance to visit Mapperton Gardens for free between 11am and 5pm on Monday, September 13, as part of Heritage Open Days. Booking is not required.
