BRIAN Stock believes Weymouth’s fans can play an integral part in the Terras’ fortunes this Vanarama National League season.

Stock’s men were beaten 2-0 by Boreham Wood on the opening day as a Kane Smith volley and Tyrone Marsh’s clever lob silenced the home crowd.

The fixture was Weymouth’s first home league game without Covid-19 restrictions since Saturday, March 14, 2020 and the 2-0 win over Slough.

And Stock insisted Weymouth’s supporters have a big role to play, with 1,195 turning up for the opening day.

He said: “We’re going to need that for the rest of the season.

“Support has been great, they’ve turned out in their numbers and that’s everything we’re asking as a club.

“The fans have done their part. The result hasn’t (come) on the opening day but I can assure you that’s through no lack of effort from the players.

“They tried their hardest, I just felt we came up short on quality.

“There was no urgency in the first half. I wanted us to restart goal-kicks quicker, free-kicks quicker.

“Against Boreham Wood as soon as we start doing that they’re happy, they get into position and make it very hard for us to break them down.

“The second half gave us things to work on and we were braver with the centre-halves stepping in with the ball and not going too direct too soon.

“Those were the key factors for us as a footballing team that we need to correct.”

Asked if opening day nerves had contributed to the defeat, Stock told Echosport: “Yeah, I’d say so.

“There were one or two uncharacteristic mistakes from one or two individuals.

“The ball going out of play, underneath a foot, those are frustrating. Sometimes when we got into good areas, we didn’t really capitalise.

“We’ve got the beauty of looking back at this on DVD and correct one or two things.”
