A broad look at the food scene in Dorchester shows a wide range of dining options available, both at major food chains or independents.

If you want a nice burger, you can go to either Cow and Apple or Georgie Porgie Pie and Burger Co, some tasty Asian food at Wagamama or visit multiple curry houses for some Indian food.

You can easily grab a quick bite in Dorchester, but surprisingly on a Saturday afternoon, it was tough to decide whether to go and what we already wanted to eat.

But myself and my wife stumbled upon Souvlaki and More, a colourful takeaway based on Trinity Street.

The cosy sized takeaway is tucked in between the popular Plaza cinema and Cow and Apple restaurant.

It’s been the venue for many takeaways over the years, including the interestingly named ‘Kebab Mania’, but now it’s the home for a chef who claims to offer some authentic Greek food.

What I ordered

After scanning the menu, it was clear I wanted one thing – the authentic Chicken Gyros wrap.

Wrapped in a flatbread, the wrap contained tomatoes, onions, parsley, chips, with a coating of tzatziki sauce.

With no queue, we were able to place an order with the chef who was also the owner.

I didn’t catch his name, but he was very friendly. He told us how he makes the food, offered tips with how to make tasty Greek sauces and engaged with some banter.

He even let us try the chicken meat set to go into our wraps and we were very impressed with the taste and flavour of it.

It was a promising start and made me more eager to get my gyros wrap. With the takeaway’s kitchen in clear view, I could see the multiple steps involved with constructing the mighty gyros wrap.

We were handed the wraps and made our way to our car to carefully eat the food.

I’m not a particularly anxious person when it comes to eating food in public, but I am concerned I could take a bite out of a wrap and feel embarrassed when the food spills out or I get sauce on my clothes in full view.

A tasty blend of flavours – what happened when I ate the wrap

Dorset Echo:

We sat down and could see each wrap was full to the brim with food. If I drop anything in the car, I will probably be walking home so I had to be careful eating this.

After picking out the top bits of food, I went in for my first bite. The first bite was glorious. The sauce hits you and it blended so well with the meat and salad.

The strips of meat were also a delight. The flavoursome tender meat was thoroughly cooked and there was plenty of chicken tucked into this wrap.

The flatbread wrap itself was thick and fresh and was able to adequately contain the mass amount of food tucked inside.

The tzatziki sauce was also really good. It was nice and sweet and really complimented the gyros wrap. The smell of the wrap as well was incredible.

Following the meal, I was full and satisfied with my meal. My only advice would be to eat this with a fork and pick out some bits of food to make it easier to eat.

Dorset Echo: The tasty gyros wrap was a delight The tasty gyros wrap was a delight

I will be honest here and show my basic culinary experience - I have only had one gyros wrap from a restaurant before. It was at a food festival event in Weymouth town centre about two to three years ago and was from a Greek stall.

It was a mind-blowing experience so to speak as I never realised chicken, chips, salad in a pitta bread wrap with a tasty sauce would be so delicious.

Since that ground-breaking day, I have hunted for an appealing place to purchase a gyros and sit and eat it while watching the world go by. I haven’t ventured to Greece, so I have had to search locally.

The homemade gyros wraps were a delight and fun to make, but an authentic Greek gyros is what I wanted.

But with Souvlaki and More, I think I have found *the place* for a delicious gyros wrap locally.

The combination of flavours, how tightly packed the Gyros wrap was, along with the nice chips made this a really satisfying experience.

What do other reviews say?

If my glowing review doesn’t make your mind up for you, other customers have also shared their praise of the takeaway.

One online review reads: “A tasty Greek take-away “feast” at reasonable prices with friendly and efficient service.

“Enjoyed the yummy cheese balls starter, and the fresh Greek salad with its slab of feta cheese to break up and add oneself, although due to the generous size of our shish kebab main portions we had to keep it over for the next day.”

The reviewer did share some ‘small disappointments’ over the shish kebabs being more ‘sausage in style’ and wasn’t too fond of the sauces.

Another diner said: "Amazing - best takeaway in the area. If you like Greek food you have to try it."

One glowing review reads: "Absolutely fantastic place! It was lucky find as we were starving and was pleased they were open.

"Extremely hospitable and the food was incredibly delicious and authentic. If you have the chance try it out cause it’s well worth it!"
