WEYMOUTH Cougars Sports Under-13s destroyed the competition to win the AFC Corsham six-a-side tournament – without losing a game or conceding a goal.

Cougars made light work of some very good opposition, with their performances growing stronger as the tournament progressed.

Abbey Meades Strikers were their opponents in the final, with Cougars having drawn 0-0 against the same opposition in the opening game of the tournament.

This time, Cougars ended the tournament by beating them 1-0 in a closely contested and entertaining final.

Jim Halls, Cougars' club treasurer said: “Well done Andy (Cleeton, coach), Lukasz and all the players. We are very proud of what the team has achieved over the last few seasons. As we are proud of all our teams both present and past.

"Cougars have always believed in the importance of giving youngsters the opportunity to play football and to keep the costs as low as possible.

"Even after taking over the maintenance of the pitches at the Marsh from the council, those additional costs are met not by player subscriptions but by fundraising and grants. It is a constant battle to keep the Marsh open for football and the club really needs the support of the local community."

Cougars' coach Andy Cleeton said: "We had to split the squad into two teams of six with no substitutes, so it was a tough day for all the players. The other Cougars' team thoroughly deserved to win their final deciding group game with the way they played, but were unlucky not to progress to the knockout stages. Overall it was good experience for the team, they were all challenged and lots of learning has taken place."

Lending a helping hand this year, Clark’s Boatworks of Portland have kindly supplied the kit for the whole team – a move welcomed by the parents and players, especially now more and more families are struggling financially.

Any individual or business who would consider donating to ease running costs of the Marsh pitches are welcome to contact Jim Halls on 07968 050486 or club chairman and ex-Weymouth captain Andy Harris for more information.
