STARS of The Royal Ballet will perform at a 15th century manor house to raise money for theatre workers who have struggled during the pandemic.

A charity ballet gala organised by Meaghan Grace Hinkis, first soloist at The Royal Ballet, will take place at Athelhampton House on September 11 and 12.

Meaghan organised the event following the success of last year's inaugural gala which also took place at Athelhampton House and raised more than £45,000 for Acting for Others, a charity offering financial and emotional assistance and support to those in the entertainment profession who have fallen on hard times.

Meaghan, who has performed with The Royal Ballet since 2011, could see the damage the coronavirus pandemic was having the to theatre industry while venues were forced to close during the national lockdowns, and she was determined to do something to help struggling artists.

She said: "The performing arts sector has really struggled in the pandemic, and lockdown was particularly scary for artists like myself who had no idea when we’d be able to perform again.

"This uncertainty has been difficult to sit with on many levels, particularly as we come to question the sustainability of our art and our livelihood. As restrictions began to lift last year, I felt that something had to be done to support the sector and talented artists who are not only struggling mentally but financially too."

This year's charity gala will once again be held in the grounds of the Tudor mansion and will also feature performances by musicians from the orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Guests will have the chance to picnic in the gardens before enjoying the outdoor performances which will take place in the late afternoon and have covered seating.

"Last year’s successful weekend of live music and dance will stay with me forever. The funds raised have helped keep our cherished theatres afloat during one of the most challenging times in our history.

"This year’s donations will aid our arts communities to return to their pre-Covid splendour."
