DORCHESTER Town are “exploring every avenue” to bring a new striker into the club, manager Robbie Herrera has revealed.

The Magpies host Yate Town in the FA Cup first qualifying round tomorrow (3pm) still without a recognised senior striker in their squad.

Dorchester have youngster Joel Hewitt on their books – but the forward has often been playing for Portland United and scored a hat-trick last weekend.

Asked by Echosport just how extensive the search for a striker has been, Herrera said: “We’re on the phone, chasing leads and onto players not only from our league but above.

“But we’re looking at lads who are doing the business in leagues below as well, so we’re exploring every avenue.

“At the moment it’s not bearing any fruit. We’re chasing players and they’ve gone to other clubs, that’s a problem we’ve had.

“Hopefully we’ve got a couple of irons in the fire. We’re hoping that will come off in the next few days or next week.

“It’s taken a bit of work, phone calls and tracking people down.”

On the cup tie, Herrera is keen to improve on last year’s 2-1 upset against Christchurch.

He said: “It’s always nice to have a cup run and it’s a nice distraction from the league.

“It’s a game you want to win and hopefully if we can get a result – because performances of late have been good – it will breathe confidence.

“If we can get a decent result, it sets us up nicely for the league in the following week.”

Herrera added: “It’s another game we want to win and we’ll do our best to win it.

“We’ve got a couple of loanees who aren’t available but it gives a chance for the players that haven’t been getting game time recently to show their worth.”

Herrera backed the Magpies to “give a team a beating” if recent good displays continue.

He said: “We said that last week, there’ll be a time where we’ll give a team a beating.

“Whether it’s two, three or four I don’t know. The lads have been in good mood. They’ve worked hard.

“They haven’t got what they deserved in the games but we’re making a couple of costly mistakes at the other end.

“If we can eradicate that and be more ruthless in front of goal, then we’ll start picking up results.”

Goalkeeper Gerard Benfield and defender Callum Buckley will miss the game to avoid being cup-tied for their parent clubs. Dorchester have no new injuries.
