TOM Blair reflected on a “strange” reunion with Dorchester Town and admitted: “I did well not to walk in the home dressing room”.

Blair returned to haunt his old club last Saturday, firing home a superb left-footed volley in the 90th minute for a 1-0 win.

His goal capped an eye-catching debut for loan club Salisbury, the Whites having signed the winger from Eastleigh until January.

But for Blair, the occasion was bittersweet, with it coming against his boyhood club – for whom he has appeared over 150 times.

He told Echosport: “I tried not to think about it too much before.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been in the away dressing room as a player, so it was a bit strange. I did well not to walk into the home dressing room!

“It was a bit strange but once I got there I just tried to focus on playing for Salisbury.

“We had a job to do and I just blocked out everything. Once I was out there it was just like another game for me.

“Obviously it was bittersweet. I scored the winner but afterwards I didn’t know how to feel.

“To be fair, Dorchester played really good football and we were a bit lucky in the end but it was nice to score on my debut.”

On the goal itself, Blair added: “I’ve got a decent left foot but when you score one like that it doesn’t happen very often.

“The celebration was relief. It was on my debut and regardless of where it was scored I’m going to be wheeling away, celebrating.

“It was the manner of the goal and the 90th-minute winner. It was nothing towards Dorch.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Dorchester but I just got a bit carried away.”

Blair, who has made 22 appearances for Eastleigh since signing his first professional deal last season, also explained the reasoning behind his loan.

He added: “Me and the gaffer (Ben Strevens) sat down at the end of last season and said he wanted to push me on and get me a first-team spot.

“I played quite a lot last year but not in my preferred position. I was having to play right wing-back and I think I did all right there.

“On the wing as a wide player is definitely my best position and unfortunately at the time we were playing a 3-5-2 formation.

“Obviously that doesn’t incorporate wingers, so it was a bit of a struggle for me to try and find a position I could play in.

“Especially as the lads who can play in that position have experience of playing in (the National League).

“I’d rather get out and play minutes, come back in as a winger and I’d have played however many games for Salisbury.

“It just felt right to go out and play elsewhere, keep match fit so when I go back to Eastleigh I’m ready to go.”
