ACCESS to tips will be restricted this weekend during the popular Ironman event, where thousands are expected to turn out.

Ironman will return to Weymouth on Sunday for the first time since 2019 after last year's event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 2,300 athletes from 20 countries will descend on the town to take part in the gruelling fitness challenge, where they will swim 1.2 miles, cycle 56 miles and run 13.1 miles.

The event traditionally attracts thousands of spectators who line the streets and several road closures have been put in place to keep people safe.

The Weymouth tip will be closed on Sunday during the event and residents are warned that access to the tip in Dorchester will be 'disrupted'.

People needing to dispose of their rubbish this weekend are encouraged to use alternative tips, such as Portland or Wareham.

A spokesman for Dorset Council Waste Services said: "Weymouth Household Recycling Centre (HRC) will be closed on Sunday, September 19 for the Ironman event. Access to Dorchester HRC will also be disrupted.

"Please use alternative facilities at Portland or Wareham, or delay your visit until the sites reopen."
