A MOTORCYCLIST has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a crash involving a lorry on the A35.

Emergency services were called to reports of a collision between a motorbike and lorry on a section of the route near Wilmington, just over the Dorset-Devon border, at around 1.15pm today (Monday, September 13).

The road, which links Devon with Dorset, was closed shortly after police officers arrived as paramedics attended the scene.

The key route saw heavy traffic in the area and in West Dorset as motorists diverted around the road closure.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said a motorcyclist with serious injuries was undergoing further medical treatment at hospital.

He said: "Police were called at 1.15pm today to the A35 at Wilmington following reports of a collision involving a lorry and a motorbike.

"The bike rider has sustained serious injuries and will be taken to hospital.

"The road has been closed whilst emergency services attended the scene."

At the time of writing, the A35 remains closed as National Highways warn of delays in the area.

An update from Inrix states: "A35 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to accident, a motorcycle and lorry involved between Tower Road (Honiton) and Old Taunton Road (Shute).

"Affecting traffic between Honiton and Axminster, closure expected to be in place for some time, delays between Monkton and Newcott due to diverting traffic."

The road reopened after 5.30pm, National Highways shared in a tweet.
