CREWS were called out to a fire in the open which was thought to have been started maliciously.

Two fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze which involved a large log pile near Wareham Forest on Bere Road in Coldharbour, Purbeck late last night.

A spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to Bere Road, Coldharbour at 10.57pm yesterday evening to a large fire in the open. Two crews from Wareham, a Land Rover pump from Bere Regis and the water carrier from Poole attended the incident which involved a large log pile – no firefighting action was carried out as the fire was contained to a field and monitored by the landowner throughout the night.

"The Police were requested to attend and the incident was handed over to them. Our stop came at 11.49pm."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Dorset Police received a report at around 11.35pm on Tuesday 14 September 2021 of a fire in woodland near to Bere Road in Coldharbour, Purbeck.

"It is reported that the fire was believed to have been started deliberately. Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team have been made aware and enquiries are ongoing into the incident. No arrests have been made."
