A ROAD shut is set to be closed until the end of the week as engineers carry out emergency repairs to fix a gas leak.

Wyke Road in Weymouth has been closed since 3pm on Tuesday afternoon (September 21) after SGN engineers responded to reports of a gas leak in the area.

A road closure was put in place between Lansdowne Square and Portmore Gardens where SGN engineers are at the scene assessing the area.

Barriers have been placed on Wyke Road near its junction for Cross Road, with access only permitted for local residents.

For more than a day, it was not known how long the road closure will be in place for, but now Travel Dorset say the leak has been found by engineers.

The travel service states that the road will be closed until the end of the week as engineers continue to fix the leak.

A spokesman for Travel Dorset said: "SGN continue work on the gas leak on Rodwell Trail, they have located the leak and are now working to isolate it before continuing with the repairs.

"It is anticipated the full closure will remain in place until the end of this week."

A spokesman for SGN however noted that it is 'still too early to say how long repairs will take to complete' but will aim to finish the repairs 'as soon as possible'.

He said: "Our engineers are continuing emergency repair work to our gas main in Wyke Road.

"To ensure everyone's safety, the road remains closed fully between its junctions with Portmore Gardens and Gypsy Lane. This route is also closed for pedestrians.

"Access for residents will be maintained and a signed diversion route is in place for motorists.

"It’s still too early to say how long repairs will take to complete, but we’re working as quickly and safely as possible."

The road closure is causing disruption in the area as motorists divert around the shut section of Wyke Road.

Traffic maps have shown multiple delays and congestion on Boot Hill as drivers travel up and down the road and are unable to access Wyke Road.
