Grimsby fisherman sentenced over Bridport attack

The Echo reported in August how Robert Jennings, 38, had admitted assaulting Scott Williams and using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour.

He has now been sentenced.

Weymouth Magistrates Court previously heard Jennings had been drinking in Neon Bar in East Street on July 24 but left the premises when he saw a drunk person being put in a taxi by a staff member.

Jennings was seen swearing in the street as he challenged the staff member.

This caught the attention of Scott Williams, an off-duty security officer, who went over and was punched in the face by Jennings causing a swollen black eye.

Mr Williams said before Jennings was arrested he saw him 'throwing punches at people outside the bar'.

Jennings is of Cranwell Drive, Grimsby, but had been temporarily been living in the Bridport area at the time of the offence.

His solicitor Lee Christmas previously told magistrates: "He's a fisherman who has come from Grimsby to work. He spends long periods of time out at sea. He was letting off some steam while on land."

At a sentencing hearing at magistrates court on September 9, Jennings was given a community order where he must abstain from consuming alcohol in a public place for 90 days and keep in contact with probation regarding his progress throughout that period.

He was also ordered to pay compensation of £125, a victim surcharge of £95 and court costs of £85.
