A TRAFFIC warning has been issued this morning for motorists travelling to and from Portland.

Dorset Council have said delays are likely and that motorists should 'allow extra time for journeys' after roadworks have started near the derelict Ferrybridge Inn site off Portland Road.

The resulting temporary traffic lights are causing slow traffic on A354 Portland Road in both directions around Whitehead Drive.

There are reports this morning that around 8am traffic was back up to Fortuneswell as motorists heading northbound.

The A354 Beach Road is the only access route off Portland for motorists.

Yesterday afternoon and evening, long queues were seen stretching from Portland northbound along the Beach Road and from Weymouth southbound in Buxton Road, Chickerell Road, as well as the surrounding area of Wyke Regis.

An update from Travel Dorset reads: "We are sorry to report that very long delays and disruption is likely this evening due to urgent Wessex Water works on Portland Beach Road at Ferry Bridge.

"Temporary lights are in use with extended working hours to expedite work.

"Please allow extra time for journeys on Portland Beach Road this morning as urgent

"Wessex Water works continue near Ferry Bridge.

"Very long delays are likely."

Wessex Water have been contacted for a statement.
