A NEW family-friendly science festival is coming to Weymouth this weekend.

Nothe Fort has announced that it will be hosting its first Weymouth Family Science Festival tomorrow, Sunday, October 3 from 11am to 4pm.

There are going to be a number of attractions at the festival including talks from Bournemouth University scientists who will be using microscopes to show visitors the fascinating and invisible world of microbes.

Genoveva Esteban, professor of microbiology at Bournemouth University said: “Bournemouth University is very excited to be involved. We shall be bringing you the fascinating and invisible world of microbes. We will also explore with you other wildlife, from insects and fish to elephants.”

Other attractions include demonstrations from World Life who will be bringing a range of exotic animals to Nothe Fort and letting visitors meet and get up close to a range of different creatures. However, there are limited places for these workshops, so booking is essential.

Portland Museum’s Pop Up Museum will also be at the event and will give families the opportunity to discover and learn about Jurassic fossils, Portland stone, archaeology, and the work of ground breaking scientists.

And Jurassic Coast Trust will be running its own paint-your-own ammonite activity and volunteers from the Institute of Physics will be demonstrating how to make simple rockets.

Nothe Fort chairman, James Farquharson said: “We have had so much positive feedback about hosting a Science Festival at the Fort.

"Nothe Fort has so many interesting science related stories to tell and Weymouth is a hub of science based industries. We hope that this will be the beginning of a regular programme."

This event is free as part of the entrance ticket to Nothe Fort. Tickets can be bought on the door and annual passes are accepted.

Mary-Anne Edwards, co-general manager at Nothe Fort said: “Nothe Fort wants to encourage the local visitors to return.

"Our current day ticket can be converted to an annual pass, which means you will be able to return to join in with our Halloween and Christmas activities for free. "
