ROAD closures will be in place in Weymouth town centre as an annual motocross competition returns for the first time since 2019 this weekend.

Parts of The Esplanade and Custom House Quay will be temporarily closed on Sunday during the Weymouth Beach Motocross, where nearly 300 riders are expected to take on a course of jumps and bumps along the beach.

Between 9am and 5pm, all vehicles will be prohibited from proceeding along The Esplanade from the Pavilion Car Park up to the small roundabout next to Weymouth Pavilion. Vehicles will also be unable to drive along the front of the Pavilion Car Park to access Custom House Quay. The road fronting Devonshire Buildings will be open for access only.

Traffic will be re-routed through the one-way system around Alexandra Gardens to continue on The Esplanade, or can use Pilgrims Way for access to Custom House Quay.

The motocross event, which first came to the town in 1984, is popular in Weymouth, and riders and spectators alike are excited to see it return after it was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Weymouth Beach will be transformed into a motocross course which will see three classes of riders - expert, senior and junior - participate in two races each.

The event will take place from 10am until 5pm on Sunday.
