Taken sometime between Monday 29th March and Monday 5th April 1965, this view shows one of the very last goods trains on the Portland branch, as it crosses the Backwater Viaduct at Weymouth, headed by a BR Standard Ivatt 2-6-2T.
The 180 yard long five span steel viaduct across Radipole Lake replaced the original wooden viaduct in 1909; which dated from the opening of the line in 1865.
After closure of the Portland branch in April 1965, the viaduct was demolished, the work commencing in November 1974.
Due to difficulties, the demolition work was not completed until after the 1975 summer holiday season. Note the Bedford S-Type box van in the foreground.
