AN ICE cream treat for dogs created in Bridport has been shortlisted for a prestigious industry award.

Bridport-based ice cream manufacturer Baboo Gelato has been recognised by its peers with its frozen dog treats, Doggy Doggy Yum Yum, making the finals of both the PetQuip and Pet Industry Federation (PIF) Awards.

The brand made the finals of the Product Innovation (dog treats) and Business Start-up categories at the PetQuip Awards and the New Business Award at the PIF Awards - which will take place at a black tie event on Thursday, October 21 at Whittlebury Hall Hotel and Spa in Northampton.

Sam and Annie Hanbury, the husband and wife team behind Baboo Gelato ice cream found that lots of their customers were buying ice cream for their dogs. Realising that dogs are somewhat lactose intolerant, they saw a gap in the market for a vegan, organic, dairy free premium frozen treat for dogs, and created Doggy Doggy Yum Yum.

Mrs Hanbury said: “We’re delighted to have been recognised in our first year by both PetQuip and the PFI. It is a real honour. We’ve been astonished how quickly Doggy Doggy has spread nationally.”

Mr and Mrs Hanbury believe that Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is the first frozen treat to meet all the dietary and environmental criteria as it is organic, dairy free, gluten free and is environmentally friendly as the container tub is fully recyclable.

The treats are made with peanut butter and bananas and uses coconut milk instead of dairy to be kinder to dogs’ digestive systems.

Made with peanut butter and bananas which dogs find hard to resist, this frozen treat uses coconut milk instead of dairy so it is kinder to dogs’ tummies.

Earlier this year, Baboo Gelato have secured national distribution through Pedigree Wholesale Ltd meaning that pet owners throughout the country can now purchase the treats, which are now stocked in 120 stores.
