POOLE TOWN U23 0

DORCHESTER Sports progressed to the Dorset Senior Trophy quarter-finals with an emphatic 5-0 win over Poole Town Under-23s at the Avenue Stadium.

In a game hastily switched to Sports’ home ground following original plans to hold the tie in Blandford, chances flowed early on at both ends.

Darren Watts shot wide for Sports, who were later indebted to goalkeeper Nick Hutchings for two excellent saves.

Former Poole keeper Hutchings was alive to the danger for the first chance, pushing a goalbound effort around the post before thwarting a one-on-one chance.

His efforts were rewarded when Charlie Gosney struck a quickfire double before half-time to put a young Dolphins team on the backfoot.

Poole never recovered from that position as Sports pressed hard on the accelerator, Alex Godfrey sweeping home for 3-0.

Watts followed up with arguably the game’s best goal, driving home from 20 yards via the post.

And there was further gloss added to the scoreline when Nick Voss continued his excellent scoring form this season, tapping home for 5-0.

In the quarter-finals, Sports will host the winner of Blandford’s trip to Wimborne Town Reserves, due to be settled on Saturday.

Speaking to Echosport, Sports’ boss Ashley James was delighted by his team’s performance.

He said: “First half they had a couple of chances and Nick’s made good saves.

“I felt that if we got a couple of goals that they would get more disheartened. The first goal was really important.

“After that, we never really looked back. After the first goal there was only one team in the contest. We played some of the best football we have this season on our home pitch.

“It got transferred to the Avenue, which helped us. They couldn’t really live with some of our attacking movement.

“In the end, we scored five really good goals and it sets up a home quarter-final for us.

“It was just really good team goals. Some of the passing and moving was really positive.

“We ended up, apart from Darren’s, with four tap-ins which were worked superbly well into the box. It was nice to see.

“We play Blandford or Wimborne in the quarter-finals – Wimborne are a development team and Blandford we know a lot about.

“At home we’ve won five out of five now, so we fancy our chances against anyone. It will be a great game, whoever we’re playing. We’re confident, that’s the main thing.”
