On rhe subject of so called ‘smart’ motorways, I am entirely in agreement with Ron Kirby (letters, 4th Nov).

They are transparently lethal and one can only assume that the originator was in their cups when they came up with the idea.

Unfortunately, they were taken at their word.

Last year we broke down on the M25 and were highly relieved to reach the relative safety of the hard shoulder.

Assuming one hasn’t already been shunted and crushed, the idea of sitting, stationary, in a live lane is sufficient to frighten most people to death. It certainly does me.
