PERMISSION is being sought for an outdoor deck at a beach bar in Weymouth - which has already been built.

A request for retrospective planning permission has been submitted to Dorset Council on behalf of the operators of Fantasy Island Fun Park and restaurant at Bowleaze Coveway.

The structure in question consists of a raised platform with access steps and ramp; seating areas, and two enclosed bar/serving areas, trading as the Sunset Bar and Restaurant. It is situated on the beach behind the main Fantasy Island building.

Operators of the park say the structure is temporary and will only be in position during good weather, to be dismantled and stored in parts off site.

It replaces a previous structure that was washed away by Storm Ellen in 2020. As reported, the storm battered the outdoor decking and drinks kiosk at the venue, causing damage as the tide came in as far as the bar, raising parts of the seating area floor.

Fortunately, operators managed to complete repairs and open back up to the public less than a week after being forced to shut to customers.

The proposals state that the area has a high probability of flooding, and that the operators will monitor weather conditions.

During high winds and tidal surge/high waves from the sea and/or potential flooding from the river Jordan, the raised platform and immediate access areas will be closed for use.

They will also consider closing to the public during very bad weather - however an evacuation plan is in place if there is an imminent risk of flooding whilst the Fun Park is open to the public.

According to the plans the park's owners also own the beach immediately in front of Fantasy Island, and clean it of debris and re-contour as required throughout the year.

A spokesman for architect firm MJS Design, acting on behalf of Fantasy Island, said: "The owners continue to invest in an extremely popular and well thought of leisure facility, and look at ways to retain the sustainability of the business, especially during the recent pandemic when outdoor dining was encouraged. The development is in line with the council’s policy of encouraging holiday and leisure use at Bowleaze Cove."
