FUNDRAISERS dressed in an array of superhero outfits started their new year off with a swim in the sea.

A group of 18 people took a dip on New Year’s Day to raise money for the Weymouth Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC).

And despite the poor weather conditions that did not dampen the spirits of those involved and people watching on at the event at Newton's Cove, organised by Fay Edgar from Jurassic Coast Swimming.

She said: “The rain and wind didn’t dampen the spirits. Safety was key as we entered the water by the steps at Newton’s Cove, as there was some swell which made conditions less than ideal, but safe enough when you know what you are doing.

“There were four qualified lifeguards and one trainee in attendance, all of whom were trained by Weymouth SLSC and dressed in a variety of superhero outfits from cat woman to wonder woman.

“We also had our club founder and chairwoman dressing up as wonder woman, despite being miles away on a diving holiday.”

Weymouth Surf Lifesaving Club is a non-profit organisation which promotes water safety and teaches lifesaving skills at all levels, and which Ms Edgar volunteers for.

Ms Egdar says ‘the club is such an important part of the community as it is training real life superheroes of the future’.

Following the swim three junior members of the club went in the water too for a mini training session with a board.

Aged 10-13 they are considered ‘the lifeguards of the future,’ trained to be safe in the water and be fully aware of their surroundings.

Ms Edgar added: “My daughter is one of them and even taught her friend how to do CPR one afternoon at home - lifesaving skills.

“Despite the weather the swim was a huge success. Hot chocolate and cakes were fully appreciated after the dip.

"We managed to raise nearly £200 over the two swims, on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.”
