INCONSIDERATE drivers are blocking a cul-de-sac on Portland with inconsiderate parking - leading to bins going uncollected, shopping deliveries having to be rescheduled and an ambulance getting stuck.

Vehicles are often double parked, pavements blocked and cars left on double yellow lines in Coronation Road, a situation branded by one fed-up resident as 'totally unacceptable'.

Residents said there is is a turning circle at the end of the road which is frequently blocked by parked cars, making it difficult for delivery vehicles to manoeuvre - meaning drivers have been forced to reverse back up the long road to get out.

Bin lorries have been unable to collect waste on occasions, supermarket delivery vans have had trouble getting to homes, while a resident told how an ambulance became trapped and had difficulty getting out.

The resident, who wants to remain anonymous, said: “The ambulance was there when I got back from shopping. It had to reverse all the way back up the road. It was there for about two hours as no one wanted to move their car. I feel angry on this road, no one helped at all. It is totally unacceptable.”

Despite numerous parking fines and double yellow lines the issue doesn’t seem to be deterring the congestion – with cars known to park on the pavement, subsequently blocking safe access to pedestrians, and wheelchair and pushchair users.

The resident said: “I find it very upsetting that due to people’s selfish ways and parking where they are not allowed to that we have to suffer all the time.”

Rubbish collections and supermarket deliveries have also been affected. Dorset Council vehicles had to return to the street after their waste collection crews were unable to access all properties and remove rubbish after the festive season.

Despite the reschedule, the resident said when the crew did return, they parked at the top of the road and walked down the street to collect the bins. All bins were cleared.

Also struggling to access the road are Tesco delivery drivers – who have become a lifeline for some during the pandemic. Recently, a driver was unable to make a delivery to the street, leaving them with no choice but to reschedule for the following day.

Portland Town Councillor, Rob Hughes, said: "Poor planning in the past is in part to blame for today’s problems I’m sure.

"Certainly, I do believe that all right-minded road users should aways be thoughtful and leave space for emergency vehicles, waste collection waggons etc. After all it may their home that the emergency vehicle is trying to reach."

Councillor Paul Kimber from Dorset Council, said: "I’m happy to visit Coronation road to see what our residents feel. I have started councillor surgeries in the library if residents wish to visit."

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: “On Tuesday, December 28 our bin collection crew was unable to access all the houses on Coronation Road due to parked cars blocking our vehicle. The crew attempted to alert residents to the issue when they arrived but were unsuccessful, so they emptied what they could and tried again the next day to get the rest of the bins.”

Tesco confirmed it was still making deliveries to the road. South Western Ambulance was contacted for comment.
