FOLLOWING a close win last time out, Dorchester head to Walcot tomorrow in the Tribute Southern Counties South (2pm).

Josh Ovey’s side are bidding to do the double on their opponents who they beat back in October and in so doing putting their first points on the table.

Following the 19-18 win over Swindon College Old Boys last weekend, head coach Ovey said: “That was a tough game to play against a very physical side who wanted the win badly.

“The conditions suited them more than us and our poor discipline was disappointing. But in the end, we ground out the win and that is what matters.”

With young scrum-half Freddie Charles now away for the remainder of the season, Lewis Allan steps back into his favoured position alongside Callum King at fly-half.

Last week’s match-winning try scorer Alex Sharp partners with Brad Mullins again in the second row, with Jack Hayward coming into the starting side on the wing and second-team regular Kieran Fry, after some fine performances, moving onto the opposite wing.

Steve Tucker now takes on the captaincy mantle on the field from James Newsam for the remainder of this season.

The county town outfit lie sixth in the standings with their opponents sitting two places below them. The side’s next four games are against opposition below them in the league before hosting leaders Devizes at Surcouf Park on Saturday, March 5.

Coach Ovey’s plan is to consolidate the league position and build momentum as the season goes on.

Saturday will also see Dorchester’s fabled Gladiators third XV field a large squad against Chard Thirds in a friendly at Surcouf Park (2pm).

Tony O’Connell’s side will have both James Franzen and Greg Hallett returning after long absences from the pitch, along with a number of players who have yet to return to the game from the Covid shutdown of matches.

O’Connell is keen to ensure the team have a good scrum to build the play from.

The club’s under-13s take on Crewkerne at home on Sunday with the other two matches away to Wimborne and Bournemouth for the under-15s and Colts respectively.

Elsewhere, Weymouth & Portland host Puddletown and Bridport travel to Swanage & Wareham Seconds in Tribute Dorset & Wilts One South action.
