NEW Weymouth boss David Oldfield is keen to “start the challenge” at the Terras when his side visits Boreham Wood tomorrow (3pm).

Oldfield, 53, takes charge of his maiden Vanarama National League game with a tricky assignment on paper.

Boreham Wood are flying high in fourth place and have enjoyed an excellent season, earning an FA Cup fourth round tie at AFC Bournemouth.

Adding to the difficulty tariff of 21st-placed Weymouth’s task, the Wood are unbeaten at Meadow Park in the league this season, conceding just four goals in 11 matches.

Ahead of his first fixture with Weymouth, former Oxford City manager Oldfield said: “It’s a mixture of excitement and a real looking forward to start the challenge.

PREMIUM: What can Weymouth fans expect from David Oldfield?

“It’s good to have a game on the horizon and we know how big that challenge will be.

“It’s certainly good for me to look forward to my first game and to learn a lot about the players, our attitude and how we need to be going forward.

“It’s a very big game, a difficult game. We need to make sure we train the best we can and get ourselves prepared because it’s new to everybody.

“The next game is the most important. We’re in no position to be feeling any less than that.

“They’re a very difficult task, a very good side, they’ve got some good players, they’re well managed and it’s a club that’s done well in recent years.

“It’s one we need to try and emulate – we need to give a strong account of ourselves.”

Asked if he’d had time to study Boreham Wood since joining the Terras, Oldfield said: “Yes, I’ve seen them previously as well.

“They’re well known for doing so well and having a good cup run. They’ve got a good infrastructure there and have been successful.

“But we have to make sure we’re looking at ourselves, inside our group and club and progress forward. There’s an opportunity on Saturday to try and show that.”

Strikers Ben Thomson and Brad Ash (ankle) are nearing a return, while influential midfielder Omar Mussa (ankle) will be assessed.

Oldfield added: “Everybody is going to be absolutely vital going forward, whether you’re in the team or out, it’s going to be imperative that we get a collective effort and that’s certainly what we’ll be focusing on.”
