COMPETITIVE walking football for players aged 50 and over returned to Weymouth following a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19.

The event, held at the under-threat sports centre at Redlands, saw Weymouth welcome travelling teams from Swanage, Hamworthy-based Dexter Sports and two from Dorchester.

During the course of the season, each club hosts a round-robin tournament style event with results being aggregated for the final table.

This tournament saw Dorchester A emerge as the top team on the day as they picked up maximum points from their four games, beating both Dorchester B and Dexter Sports 2-0 and picking up 1-0 wins against Swanage and Weymouth, a fortunate deflection providing the winning goal in the latter game.

Weymouth, meanwhile, garnered their only win of the day with a 2-0 victory over Dexter, goals coming from Karl Stanton and Nick Smith, whilst holding Dorchester B to a 0-0 draw and suffering a further 2-0 reverse against Swanage.

Swanage and Dexter played out a 0-0 draw.

The Dorset Walking Football league is overseen and regulated by the Dorset FA, with separate leagues for over-50s and over-60s.

Walking football allows older players to take part in both competitive and friendly football matches.

Matches are seven-a-side, with rolling substitutions allowed from a squad of 10. The sport is growing in popularity and both Weymouth and Dorchester have thriving, inclusive clubs with players aged between 50 and 79.

The next tournament takes place in Dorchester in March.
