The owner of a beloved family-run pub in Weymouth said it is with a heavy heart that she is calling time on her spell in charge - with the venue to be taken over by a brewery next week.

Jan Miners, whose family has been running the Marquis of Granby pub and restaurant in Chickerell Road for 13 years, has spoken of her family’s reign at the venue, which has become a hub for the community.

Mrs Miners said the pub, known for its distinct high pitched roof, has always provided a ‘wonderful community vibe’.

She said: “At one time, we had three generations running the pub.

“My dad Peter Bowring, who died in December 2020, was front of house and he passed the torch down to my husband Gordon, who then gave the reins to our sons Ashley and James.

“My mum Maureen was the chef, which was referred to as ‘cook’ when we started, which I took over - and my daughter-in-law Gemma runs the restaurant.

“Our son James’ wife Rachel spent many years working at the pub too. It’s been very family-orientated and a member of our family has always been there to welcome guests since we bought it.”

However, Mrs Miners said the time feels right to hang up her apron - with Hall & Woodhouse set to take over the venue on Tuesday, February 8.

She said: “It’s with a heavy heart that we’re leaving the pub and I’m sad to see it go, but we’re confident it will be in good hands as the brewery takes over.”

“Next week it will be in the brewery’s hands and my motto is: ‘Do not change it if it’s not broken’.”

Mrs Miners said the reason behind the exit is due to wanting to take some time to ‘recharge’ after she contracted Covid during the pandemic, which has affected her breathing. But she does plan to reopen another venue in the Weymouth area in future.

Mrs Miners and her family have run a variety of pubs across the area over the years including the old London Hotel in Weymouth, the Turk’s Head, in Chickerell, Ilchester Arms, Abbotsbury, and the Eype’s Mouth near Bridport.

She added: “Running a pub is all I ever known.

“I do still hope to open a smaller venue in Weymouth in the future, but I need to recharge and so does my family.”

Mark James, Property Director at Hall & Woodhouse, said: "I can confirm Hall & Woodhouse has exchanged contracts to purchase The Marquis of Granby pub, with a completion date set for February 8.

"The Marquis of Granby is a very successful business in Weymouth, that benefits from both local and significant tourist trade in the summer.

"We look forward to welcoming the pub to the Hall & Woodhouse family and continuing the fantastic work of the previous owners, Jan and Gordon, and their family."
