BLANDFORD 58

BLANDFORD gave Weymouth & Portland a ruthless lesson in finishing with a 58-0 success in their Tribute Dorset & Wilts One South clash at Monmouth Avenue.

While the Seahorses were whitewashed, Rich Bament’s men had a number of opportunities close to Blandford’s tryline.

However, they were either met by strong defence, made handling errors or poor decisions within sight of the line.

Weymouth & Portland were then given problems at the other end by Blandford’s outstanding fly-half, who orchestrated play for the north Dorset side.

Blandford scored several tries from set-plays as they maintained their pursuit of leaders North Dorset.

Speaking to Echosport, Bament said: “They were a lot more clinical, every chance they had they put away.

“That was the difference. It was quite a physical first 15, 20 minutes when we more than matched them.

“But when they had their chances it was boom, boom, boom, try, try, try.

“They’ve got a stand-out fly-half who you just can’t get near and he dictates the play.

“We were more than even in the scrum and every line-out, the rucks and mauls were good so you’ve got to take all the positives.

“At the end of the day, every chance they had, they put away. When you’ve got a fly-half like that who controls the game by kicking all the space he sees, you’ve got to stand and admire.

“I gave him a big congratulations at the end of the game.”

Despite the defeat, Weymouth & Portland stay third ahead of a trip to face North Dorset at Slaughtergate on Saturday.

Bament said: “We’re third and up there pushing. One defeat doesn’t make our season.

“If I’m honest, we should’ve beaten them at our place. We’ve got quite a few people available and it will be a good game to watch.

“We’ve had another good season and hopefully it’ll be a top-three finish. It’s all to play for.

“It won’t be easy, we’ll just take each game as it comes.”

Seahorses’ scrum-half Craig Barter misses out.

“It’s a hip problem,” Bament said. “He’s the only one. Apart from that, everyone’s available.

“It makes my life even harder – it’s good and bad.”
