Can anyone tell reader Geoff Kirby what these mystery objects are?
They are both cast iron pipes placed at the kerbside.
The one with the screwed cap used to stand in Spa Road, Weymouth, at the summit of the hill but was removed – presumably destroyed – when the road was widened.
The other survives and stands outside the Park Hotel near the junction of Grange Road and Carlton Road South.
Mr Kirby said: "I believe they may date back to a time before motor vehicles when the roads were not asphalted.
"Lorries fitted with water tanks would travel around spraying water on the roads to keep the dust down in hot dry summers. These standpipes were scattered around the town to replenish the water carriers.
"Unless your readers know better?"
If anyone can shed any light on the mystery iron pipes and their purpose we would love to hear from you. Call 01305 830973 or email joanna.davis@dorsetecho.co.uk
