Police have been monitoring a large group of drinkers who have been in Weymouth since this morning.

It is understood they are supporters of Yeovil Town FC who have come down to watch the game against Weymouth this afternoon (kick off 1pm).

Police officers were monitoring the group who were inside The William Henry (Wetherspoon) pub in St Thomas Street and were also congregating outside the venue, at the junction with Westham Road.

One onlooker said about 30 men, some wearing football shirts, were standing outside the pub. More were heard inside, chanting.

A number of police vehicles were seen in the area as officers monitored the group.

Dorset Echo:

The group moved off about 11.30am and were escorted by police as they headed down Westham Road, in the direction of the football ground.

Earlier, onlookers told how part of Frederick Place was cordoned off by police following what was thought to have been a fight in the area.

One man who was passing the scene said: "I was on my way to work about 9.30am and I saw a huge crowd of lads. A lot of police were arriving. I saw one person on the floor. I assumed there had been a punch up.

"You see things like this at night but at that time of the morning it was shocking to witness. There were six police cars and two riot vans."
