I was not elected to Parliament to make easy decisions, but to do what I believe is best for our country whilst advocating for West Dorset and listening to my colleagues as they make their case to the House and share their views.

Some people believe that the Prime Minister should go and, more so, believe I should be instrumental in his immediate removal. There are also many others who believe strongly that the Prime Minister is subject to a media witch-hunt.

I cannot sympathise enough with those who are deeply distressed after having experienced the trauma of loss for a loved one during Covid. I know that a lot of people are hurting when they see reports of parties and want to see immediate action from me and my colleagues.

The full facts have not been provided to us as MPs yet. Other than what we have heard in the press or from individuals, the police have not completed their investigation and neither has Sue Gray presented hers. For such a considerable situation, the full facts are needed.

We also have realities with what is going on with Ukraine and with Russia. This week, Russia has said it is cutting off gas to Poland and to Bulgaria. The United Kingdom is leading the diplomatic effort across the world to support Ukraine in its defence and I am of the view that if we were to change the Prime Minister now, it would weaken a worsening situation and heighten the risk for other nations.

Boris Johnson and President Zelenskyy have developed a strong working relationship. He is committed to helping Ukraine to the very limits of our abilities. To force him out of office now will really damage that work. That’s why I won’t be calling for any resignations now, especially without the full facts of any wrongdoing.
