THREE people were taken to hospital following a serious two-vehicle crash which left a key route gridlocked yesterday.

The A354 at Fortuneswell on Portland was closed for hours yesterday evening following a crash at around 4.25pm.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were all called to the scene on Hambro Road near the Britannia Inn.

Firefighters had to remove the roof of one of the vehicles to free a casualty.

The ambulance service said that three people involved in the crash were injured and taken to Dorset County Hospital.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “We were called at 4.25pm on Wednesday 4 May to a road traffic collision in Fortuneswell, Portland. We sent three double-crewed land ambulances and an operations officer, and conveyed three patients to Dorset County Hospital."

The injuries were not believed to be serious.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "We were called at 4.25pm on Wednesday 4 May 2022 to a report of a two vehicle collision in Hambro Road on Portland. It was reported that three people were in need of medical attention and were treated by the ambulance service.

"Their injuries were not believed to be serious but we do not have any further condition update at this time. The vehicles were recovered and officers left the scene shortly before 8pm."

The road was blocked both way causing congestion to the bridge and routes around Fortuneswell, with one motorist saying that traffic for motorists getting both on and off the island was gridlocked.

A spokesman for the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were informed by the Police of a road traffic collision on Hambro Road, Portland at 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

"Two crews from Portland attended the incident which involved two vehicles – two people self-rescued from one vehicle, and firefighters removed the roof of the second vehicle to assist another casualty.

The fire service's stop, indicating that the situation had been contained and no further assistance was required, came in at 5.58pm.
