It has been confirmed that the walkway on Weymouth Harbour which has been slammed for its controversial colour will not remain 'Shrek' green.

Dorset Council has apologised for any confusion and says the quayside work isn't finished and the final colour of the footpath will be 'in keeping with the surroundings'.

As previously reported, Dorset Council recently revealed via a Facebook post the completion of its footway imprinting works along Custom House Quay as major work to resurface and improve the street scene comes a step closer to completion.

It followed months of works which saw the route closed and the area turned into a building site.

However, the latest update showed the pathway with a greenish tint which was described by one Dorset Councillor, as 'Shrek coloured'.

Dorset Council has revealed that the pathway will not remain green with work still underway on the site and clarified that the current colour does not represent how the walkway will look when it is completely finished.

At the time, Cllr Louie O'Leary said: "I've raised the Shrek coloured quay with the Cabinet member for highways. It's disgusting. I was the only member of the South and West area planning committee to vote against the current harbour scheme last year and feel very vindicated in doing so."

When asked about the comments made about the route's colour scheme, a spokesman for Dorset Council said: “We're aware that the appearance of the footway along Custom House Quay has generated lots of interest, following a social media post (on April 29) that suggested our contractor had finished work on the path.

"To clarify, works in this area are ongoing and the current colours of both the footway and road do not represent how they will look when we are finished. The final colour of the footpath will be in keeping with the surroundings.

"We apologise for any confusion caused and will continue to provide updates as the works at Custom House Quay progress.”

When asked about what the final colour would be the council said it was understood that it would be 'a sandy buff type colour'.

Work to resurface Custom House Quay and improve the street scene is not actually finished as the programme is behind schedule.

Dorset Council said that work on carriageway imprinting will be continuing from May 16 and is forecast to finish on May 27.

The council said it will also be installing benches along the harbourside footway, erecting signs, reinstating bollards and finishing lining work over the next month and has said that it will be completed by the half term holidays starting on May 30.

Work by Dorset Council started on October 4 last year and has included:

* Footway next to buildings between St Mary Street and Pilgrims Way widened and new paving slabs laid

* Footway along the harbour side widened and resurfaced

* Footway between Pilgrims Way and the Esplanade renewed

* Fisherman’s ramp near St Mary Street rebuilt

* Kerbing realigned

* New drainage channels installed to the new alignment of the road

* Road resurfaced
