Work is progressing for the next phase of a major £1m upgrade around Weymouth train station.

As reported, work on a £1m transformation of Weymouth rail station kicked off in November last year - with commuters told of alternative parking arrangements as the project progresses.

The second phase of work on Pocket Park (Railway Heritage Park) is now underway and will see the transformation of an unused section of land where the tramlines and crossing gates will be retained.

Steven Booth, Dorset Coast Forum project officer, said: "The park will be opened up merging with the existing path that runs alongside B&Q to create an attractive shared walkway and cycle link between King Street and the Jubilee Retail Park.

"The transformed area will become a Railway Heritage Park to reflect the history of the railway and former tramlines along the harbour.

"This work commenced on May 10 and should take around five weeks when final surfacing will be completed in both the station forecourt pedestrian area and Rail Heritage Park at the same time."

The first phase of the work will be a revamp of the station forecourt, in King Street.

The main area of the station forecourt is now open for access, however final surfacing in the central pedestrian area is yet to be completed.

This is expected by the end of June after electrical and lighting work has been finalised.

The completion of the new enhanced CCTV upgrade is also expected in June, according to Dorset Council.

Mr Booth added: "First Wessex will be running services into the station and on King Street from the end of May and until permanent infrastructure is available temporary stops will be in place. A shelter for the station forecourt will installed at a later date.

The final work will be railway heritage information to recognise the contribution the railway made to Weymouth over the years, which will be displayed in the station forecourt, as well as locations where the tramlines still exist.

This includes the new Railway Heritage Park, the Loop by Cosens Quay and the Quay near the Pavilion.

The proposed panels will display information, photos and other images relating to Weymouth’s Railway Heritage - to be installed around mid-July.
