I wonder what it is that irks Cllr Louie O’Leary so much that has triggered off another outburst centred on the transformation of the Custom House Quay section of Weymouth harbourside.

This time it is the Shrek coloured surface that has caused him concern; I confess I’m not over keen either, but soon it will be rectified as indicated by Dorset Council.

Yet he has taken the opportunity to remind us all that, last year, he was the only member of the south and west area planning committee to vote against the current harbour improvement scheme in Weymouth. He says he’s vindicated for doing so. (quoted from recent Dorset Echo reports)

If Cllr O’Leary was alone in voting against the improvements, seemingly fellow councillors were not. This speaks volumes.

I’m yet to meet anybody who doesn’t like the improvements overall that have enhanced the pleasure of walking, crabbing, eating, drinking, fishing, watching harbour movements and socialising at Custom House Quay where al fresco and indoor facilities all combine to encourage friendship and enjoyment.

What an enviable good reputation we have reaped! With a low level of anti-social behaviour, less than in town areas and seafront.

Yes, as he pointed out last year, this is a working harbour and I admire him for representing the fishermen and women. Hopefully anything that adversely affects their trade is addressed accordingly.

Be gracious, Cllr O’Leary, and concede that what the UK government urged councils to do was what now has evolved in Weymouth; aren’t we lucky to be part of a wider picture of moving with the times.

Maybe at the same time Cllr O’Leary will admit that the railings are out of place in design and should be part of any future adjustments.

Why not let’s meet up for coffee, presumably providing it’s not anywhere near Custom House Quay.
