A fish and chip shop in Weymouth has been named among the best in the country.

Fish 'n' Fritz was selected by The Guardian newspaper as one of the 20 best chippies by the seaside in the UK.

The Guardian has ranked the best seaside chippies across the UK – and dubbed each one of them ‘national treasures’ of the food world.

It said of the Weymouth town centre-based Fish 'n' Fritz: "Just off the harbour, this chippy with a small restaurant attached is regularly garlanded with awards, both for food and service."

Fish 'n' Fritz was named top for seaside fish and chips alongside chippies in Cornwall, Northumberland, Kent, Sussex, East Sussex, Essex, Isles of Scilly, Lancaster, Suffolk, Tyne & Wear, Yorkshire, Devon, Scotland and Wales.

The recognition for the Weymouth chippy comes at a challenging time for the industry with the war in Ukraine driving up the prices of cooking oil, fish and potatoes.

The takeaway and restaurant was opened by Paul Hay in 1997.

As recently as March, Fish 'n' Fritz was named one of the UK’s 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants and was also announced as one of the UK’s 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways 2021/2022 by Fry magazine.

Its success is hardly newfound - back in 2000 celebrity chef Rick Stein was so impressed with the fish and chips on offer at Fish 'n' Fritz takeaway and restaurant that he recommended it in his Seafood Lovers' Guide.
