EIGHTY new affordable homes could be coming to a community after plans were unveiled.

Southern Strategic Land, a Dorset-based developer, and Abri, one of the south’s largest housing providers, have submitted the plans for housing in the village of Broadmayne.

The plans would cover housing on a site of nearly five hectares with predominantly two and three-bedroom family homes being proposed.

The proposals for land off Broadmead, which have been submitted to Dorset Council, also include a carefully designed open space for the community with allotments and nearly nine hectares of publicly accessible country park-style green space. The homes will be built to Future Homes Standard in order to lower their carbon footprint via a mixture of low carbon heating and enhanced energy efficiency.

The importance of shared ownership and social rent will give opportunities for residents that are not currently available in the area.

Ben Jones from Southern Strategic Land said “Affordable housing is in high demand, with homes in Dorset at their least affordable for almost 20 years. To help meet this demand we’re delighted to be working with Abri on proposals which will provide more opportunities for people with a local connection to live in the area and to enhance the community.”

Councillor Graham Carr-Jones, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Community Safety said: "I welcome these "All Affordable" sites being brought forward by our registered providers.

"As a non-stock holding local authority, the importance of a successful relationship with key partners such as Abri and their ability to deliver much needed affordable housing in Dorset is very encouraging.

"Having seen the plans, I believe it could contribute to a bold and ambitious scheme in Broadmayne to provide a mixed tenure of housing for local people."

Louise Lote, Senior Land and New Business Manager from Abri said: “Affordable homes play an essential role in meeting local need and Abri is committed to helping strengthen communities by building 12,500 new homes by 2030. Working in partnership with Southern Strategic Land we hope to provide homes that will be of real benefit to the community and the environment by including sustainable features that will help them to reduce their carbon emissions.”
