A movie partly filmed in west Dorset will be released this month.

Scenes for a new Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion were filmed in Lyme Regis last June.

Star spotters were treated to the sight of Hollywood star Dakota Johnson strolling along the town's famous Cobb.

Johnson - of erotic film Fifty Shades of Grey fame - plays Anne Elliot, the heroine in Persuasion who was seen in period attire filming with actor Cosmo Jarvis.

The area adjacent to the Marine Aquarium on the Cobb was closed off to the public as filming continued throughout the day. The production company also took over car parks at Holmbush and Sidmouth Road.

Horse drawn carriages were brought onto the grade one-listed Cobb, which was made famous by the film the French Lieutenant’s Woman.

Netflix has announced that Persuasion will be released on the streaming platform on Friday, July 15. The film will also receive a theatrical release in select theatres on Friday, July 8.

A trailer for the film has been released showing a glimpse of the Cobb with the actors promenading upon it.

Acclaimed theatre director Carrie Cracknell is making her feature directorial debut for the film, which is based upon Jane Austen's 1817 classic novel.

In promotional material for the film, Netflix describes Persuasion heroine Anne Elliot as ' an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities'.

"Anne lives with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy. When Frederick Wentworth - the dashing one she let get away - crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances."

The author Jane Austen is known to have visited Lyme Regis in 1803 and 1804 and it is thought that international exposure of the town through Netflix will attract even more tourists to the area.

And the town will be back in the spotlight once again when Hollywood movie Wonka is released in March 2023.

Scenes for the musical, which focuses on the life of Roald Dahl character Willy Wonka before the events of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, were also filmed on the Cobb.

Dune star Timothée Chalamet and Little Britain and actor and comedian Matt Lucas were spotted amid two days of filming in Lyme in October 2021.
