A DORSET town which has had scouting for more than 100 years is in danger of losing its Scout group unless a new leader is found.

Nigel Dominy, the leader of the group in Wareham, is searching for a new leader for the 'scout' section to prevent closure.

Nigel said: "First Wareham Scout Group is a thriving group with both the Cub and Beaver sections at full capacity for its young people.

"At the moment we have a Cub leader that is covering for the Scout section too, but he can't continue to do that.

"If we don't find anyone by August then unfortunately we will have to close the Scout section and just have Beavers and Cubs.

"This will mean nineteen young people will have to leave Scouts or find another group.

"Scouting is a valuable youth resource for our town and is very popular with the young people of Wareham.

"Since the Covid relaxations, they have been doing a lot more old-fashioned scouting activities rather than doing it via Zoom.

"They were very happy to come back in and they will be terribly upset if they won't be able to continue.

Mr Dominy added: "Scouting is a very valuable resource for the town of Wareham and scouting has been in the town for over 100 years.

"The management committee is doing all that it can to prevent a closure of the section but the simple truth is if we do not have any adults to cover safety and safeguarding there will be little they can do.

"You get an awful lot of fun out of it. No qualifications are necessary, just an enthusiasm to help young people to have a good time and learn some life skills.

"Training is available for those that wish. You don't have to be Bear Grylls to volunteer."
