FIREFIGHTERS raced to the scene of a wildfire in Weymouth in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Portland, Dorchester, Bridport, Maiden Newton, Bere Regis were called to a gorse fire on the Rodwell Trail in Wyke Regis at 2am this morning.

The emergency services remained on the scene for hours dealing with the blaze and have urged members of the public to report anything suspicious, especially while the weather is warm and dry.

A spokesman for Portland Fire Station said: "At approximately 2am this morning both Portland’s pumps were called to the Wyke area to assist with a wildfire.

"Pumps from Weymouth Fire Station and Dorchester Fire Station were in attendance as well, they were supported by water carriers from Bridport Fire Station and Land Rover appliances from Maiden Newton Fire Station and Bere Regis Fire Station.

"Portland crews returned to station at around 8am to relieve crews from Bridport, who were mobilised to Portland to provide cover until this incident was dealt with."

A spokesman for Weymouth Fire Station said: "We’ve been dealing with a gorse fire tonight on the Rodwell trail in Wyke. We all know it’s warm and dry so a fire will start easily. If you see anything suspicious, please report it ASAP!"

A spokesman for Dorchester Fire Station said: "Crews used multiple hoses and beaters to extinguish the fire involving an area of Gorse.

"With the current hot and dry conditions a fire can quickly get out of hand."
