A DECADE on from Weymouth hosting the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events, there will be a host of free sporting events taking place on the beach.

Organised by Weymouth Town Council, Get Active on Weymouth Beach will offer opportunities to try ‘have a go’ sessions in football skills, Rugbytots, and volleyball.

Taking place on Sunday July 24 from 10am to 3pm, there will be the chance to get involved in fun relay races, hula hooping and throwing games.

In addition, there will be Zumba, dance aerobics, Latin solo, seated stretch along exercises, beach bootcamp and yoga – which are suitable for all and last around 20 minutes.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Ann Weaving said: “A decade on from Weymouth hosting the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events, Weymouth Town Council is hosting a series of free events on the beach to recapture the Olympic spirit and encourage more people to get active.”

There will also be an opportunity for people to learn more about Weymouth Town Council projects such as work to tackle climate change, the Neighbourhood Plan and the Friends of Tumbledown will talk about the unique former farm and the work of the volunteers.

Find out about free health walks that regularly take place weekly in Weymouth and Livewell Dorset will also be on hand to provide wellbeing tips and signpost people to local providers.

The free sporting event will round off the annual Beach Sports Festival which is taking place now until Sunday July 24 on Weymouth Beach.

This festival includes the Beach Volleyball Classic Tournament that takes place on July 15 12 to 6pm, July 16 9am to 5pm, and July 17 9am to 5pm. Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Ann Weaving will be at the event at 3pm on Sunday.

On Monday July 18 from 6.30 to 7.30pm there will be free netball have a go sessions led by a local Weymouth netball coach. Tuesday July 19 offers a just turn up and take part Aerodance event. Thursday July 21 also offers a turn up and take part session of Zumba.
