A teenage roller skater is taking part in a 10-mile skate-a-thon for a good cause.

Fourteen-year-old Darcey Allen will be skating 10 miles on Weymouth seafront on Friday, July 22 as part of a nationwide skate-a-thon for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Darcey, of Winterborne Herringston near Dorchester, is in year nine at the Thomas Hardye School, and will be starting at 2pm 'come rain or shine', she says.

She'll be skating from the Oasis Café to the Sea Life Centre and back five times, travelling 10 miles.

She had considered going all the way to the Esplanade but decided against it to avoid the crowds.

The skate-a-thon is a nationwide fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity that cares and supports 13-24 year olds with cancer. The skate-a-thon takes place from July 18 to 24 and encourages people to skate as much as they can with their own goals.

Darcey set the initial goal for her fundraiser at £150, but quickly smashed it, setting it once more at £300 which has also been surpassed and has currently raised £469.

Darcey started skating last June and often practises once or twice a week for several hours.

She said: "I often skate in Weymouth, the seafront is an interesting place to skate and it is very flat and open.

"This is going to be a challenge for sure, getting the distance in, hopefully before it gets dark.

"Depending on the speed I manage and how tired I am it will take between two and five hours. I will probably end up with blisters, but it will be for a good cause.

She recently learned how to moon walk on skates and has been practising going long distances in build up to the skate-a-thon.

Darcey added: "I saw the skate-a-thon on social media and thought it would be a cool fundraiser to do.

"It is a very good cause which I resonate with because those helped by the charity are in the same age group as me."

Darcey's mum Jude Allen said: “I am very proud of Darcey, it is a fantastic challenge she set for herself and it is for a great cause.

"I think having a daughter that age myself getting told the sort of news those supported by the Teenage Cancer Trust get, I would be devastated, which is why it is so good to support them.

"Thank you to everyone who has already donated, we welcome anyone to support the challenge and to donate money to this great cause."
