I ADMIRE Councillor Orrell for being a Green councillor, but his comments in Saturday’s Echo need to be put into context.

He refers to an integrated hub for public transport “like they have done at Poole”.

However, at Poole there is a fair walk between the bus station and the railway station, unlike Bournemouth, where trains, buses and coaches all depart next to each other.

Even Swanage manages to site its bus station next to the heritage railway station. He refers to all bus services stopping at Weymouth train station, but that is simply not practical owing to Weymouth’s road layout.

For example, buses coming from Portland cannot stop at the rail station because they are then unable to turn right from King Street to reach King’s Statue, which is where the majority of passengers wish to alight.

There would be a simple improvement if Councillor Orrell got National Express coaches to terminate at the train station, instead of on the Esplanade opposite Marks & Spencer, where there are no passenger facilities.

Finally, Councillor Orrell wants regular public transport options that make it viable for people not to drive.

Unfortunately, some people would give up food rather than their cars. Perhaps if all councillors were to use public transport instead of their cars, that would set a fine example to everybody else.
