A MAN has been jailed for beating another man in an unprovoked attack.

Anthony John Willis, whose address was given as Littlefield in Sherborne, appeared in Weymouth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, July 27.

The 39-year-old appeared in court this week for sentencing after pleading guilty on March 25 this year to one count of assault by beating.

The charge relates to an incident in which Willis assaulted another man in Sherborne by beating him on April 26 this year.

Because the offence was aggravated by the defendant's record of previous offending and because the attack was said to be an unprovoked attack of a serious nature, magistrates committed Willis to prison for a total of 10 weeks.

A restraining order was also made banning Willis from contacting, directly or indirectly, the victim, or attending an address in Sherborne for a 12-month period.

He must also pay £300 in compensation.
