Excitement is building in Dorset as the county prepares to be gripped by football fever again.

Just a year after England reached the final of the European championships, the England women will be hoping to go a step further than the men and win their Euro 2022 final against Germany today.

And pubs across Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester will be showing the match live from Wembley at 5pm, encouraging fans to come along and cheer on the Lionesses in their quest for glory.

At Dorset's largest festival, Camp Bestival, thousands of festivalgoers will turn their attention from the musical acts to a big screen showing the crunch final, which will be the first time since 2009 that England Women have reached a major final.

They have never won a World Cup or Euros trophy in their history.

Among the pubs showing the match on big screens are the Admiral Hardy in Chickerell Road, Weymouth and the Rendezvous by Weymouth Town Bridge, which is offering big screens equipped with BBC sport coverage and promises 'a great atmosphere for families.'

Taking advantage of the fair weather forecast for this weekend is the Royal Oak in Dorchester Road, Weymouth, which will be hosting live music in the garden in the build-up to screening the Euros final.

In Dorchester, Tom Brown's in High East Street will be screening the final and is even offering free pizza to punters who come along to support the team.

The Lionesses' success in the Euros will encourage girls to want to play football, a football development officer in the area says.

Jemma Tewkesbury, football development officer at Dorset FA, said: "Girls have always had role models in the women's game but now they've got even more because it's out there, it's on tv and it's visible.

"Social media has been a massive drive in promoting what the girls have done with England. As a young person watching you can aspire to be like them."

Weymouth FC Women is hoping that it can encourage new players to the team on the back of the England Women's success.

A spokesman said: "Feeling inspired by our Lionesses this summer?

"We always welcome new players to our first-team, development team and girls' teams.

"Please get in touch if you would like to come along and join the Terras!"
