DOUBLE Olympic sailing medal winner Simon Hiscocks is supporting a housing association's youth sailing project.

The Portland-based 49er sailor praised the project and is encouraging youngsters to get on board.

Weymouth and Portland Housing (WPH) is once again offering its young tenants the chance to learn a new skill with free sailing supervision during the summer.

The project is offered in partnership with Weymouth Sailing Club and volunteers.

WPH has bought an RS Feva sailing dingy and is sponsoring tenants' children aged 11-16 years to undertake RYA qualifications.

Hiscocks, of Fortuneswell, said: "Once the youngsters get involved they can participate through their whole life. Sailing is for everyone, these youngsters are getting a great opportunity to get involved.

"I started sailing when I was 14 years old. This project gets the kids off the streets and with the Olympics coming here it will create more interest. Projects like this inspire youngsters and generate greater understanding of the sport.

"Sailing can be an expensive sport, projects like this help to break down the entry barriers to the sport, while there are many opportunities to continue sailing in the local area, many of which have little to no financial costs."

Weymouth Sailing Club cadet leader Phil Samways said: "This is great news to have Simon Hiscocks on board.

"People like Simon not only help with encouraging the youngsters, it also gives them someone to look up to who has proved that hard work and dedication will take you to the top.

"The evening Simon joins us to take the youngsters out I don't think I'll have any problems getting volunteers to help."

WPH managing director Kevin Dey said: "I am proud of our partnership with Weymouth Sailing Club which has already introduced youngsters to a great confidence building and fun sport last year. Simon's support will give the project a boost and help to ensure more youngsters are inspired to give it a go this year."

The taster sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 4, Wednesday, June 18 and Wednesday, July 2. To get involved call Pam Matthews on 01305 206912.
