A GROUP of skaters are rallying their kind to 'Take Over the Promenade' to raise money for charity.

The South West Skaters are urging anyone with a pair of skates, a board, a scooter or a bike from all over the south west to join them and 'Take Over the Prom'.

The event is a skate along Weymouth's promenade to raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust.

With a designated route set out, skaters will set out from the Front Skate Park at 6.30pm on Friday, August 19, and skate to Weymouth Town Clock where there will be a celebration with a DJ waiting for them.

Last year 10 people participated and raised about £1,000, so this year the goal is to raise yet another £1,000, and so far 20 people have signed up.

The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that cares and supports 13 to 24 year olds with cancer, and often encourages skating themed fundraisers such as its skate-a-thon earlier this year.

Weymouth local and South West Skaters founder Kat Rodda said: "We chose to support the trust because some of the stuff that they do is really inspiring and gets kids the help they need in such a difficult time. We have chosen to fundraise for them before for that reason. We just want to help these kids as much as we can.

"Weymouth is such a great place to skate, with so many lovely spots such as the seafront and Rodwell, and it is a good way to keep fit and make friends, and that is part of the reason it has taken off a bit recently."

The route will start at The Front Skatepark, following down to the Oasis Cafe with volunteers helping people to safely cross the road, before going up the seafront to meet up at Weymouth's Jubilee Clock, a journey of about four miles.

"Skating is a different kind of hobby and it is one that challenges you to get better and better. It inspires those around you to do something different, and that is how the group got started.

"Everyone is welcome to join us and thank you to anyone who donates to this great cause, and we look forward to perhaps skating with you."

You can register to participate for free at the website address eepurl.com/hSmdvn. Under 18s will require a guardian to accompany them.
