A MAN shouted racial abuse at the owner of a guest house before exposing himself, a court heard.

Daniel Stephen Edwards, of Sherborne, appeared at Weymouth Magistrates' Court on Thursday, August 18, for sentencing after pleading guilty to one count of exposure, one count of attempted racially aggravated intentional harassment/alarm/distress using words and one count of possession of a Class B drug.

Prosecuting, Ms Valera, told the court that the offences took place at around 2pm on January 19 this year, at Wentworth Guest House on Lennox Street in Weymouth. She said a lot of people were sent by the council's housing department to the guest house, which is often used as a temporary first stage of housing for vulnerable people.

The owner of the property, Mark Kaushal attended the address, where Edwards was said to have acted very aggressively towards him, shouting at Mr Kaushal to get his phone from his room.

Edwards did not live at the property but had stayed there overnight with his partner in another woman's room.

In a statement read out to court, Mr Kaushal said that Edwards was making threats to him and was kicking and hitting a glass door in the property.

Edwards, aged 27, repeatedly swore and shouted at Mr Kaushal ordering him get his phone and used a derogatory racial slur to describe a person from Pakistan.

The court heard that Edwards told Mr Kaushal that he would remember his face and would come back to the guest house and 'smash it in'.

Ms Valera said that Edwards then used one hand to pull his pants down, take his genitals out and rub them on the glass door in front of Mr Kaushal.

The victim was left feeling 'intimidated', 'alarmed' and 'scared' by Edwards' behaviour and said it was like he was 'high on drugs'.

Police arrived and the defendant was arrested and was found to also be in possession of cannabis.

Ms Valera said: "This isn’t mooning or something like that, it’s really quite aggressive.

“He has taken out his genitals and rubbed them up and down a see through door which the victim was on the other side of."

Mitigating, Simon Lacey, said: “At the time of the offence he was sofa surfing and had been homeless for a year, staying with friends.

“He goes out, realises he doesn’t have a phone and the landlord, or whoever it is, doesn’t let him back in.

“He says he is ashamed of what he did.”

Mr Lacey told the court that Edwards struggled with his mental health and had Asperger’s but told him that there was no excuse for his own behaviour and was embarrassed, saying he should not have used that racist language towards anybody.

He added: “He is ashamed and knows that nobody should be spoken to the way he spoke to them.”

Chair of the bench, Sara Saunders, said: “It’s absolutely disgusting behaviour, and it has absolutely shocked all of us today."

Edwards was sentenced to an 11-month community order and must undertake 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement Days.

The defendant was also fined £50 and must also pay £250 compensation to the victim.
