I AGREE with Nothe (12 August 2022 ) that the Lords Spiritual must go from our constitutional set up.

My grandfather Herbert White was Rector of Toller Porcorum and my father David was Rural Dean of Wilton and Wylye. Both were caring parish priests, but far too outspoken to be made into bishops.

I respected and loved them both, but always thought that including clergy in our politics was wrong, especially being it only acknowledged the religion of Henry VIII, yet another time warped anomaly of British history, after all just a convenient device to marry another woman!

One thing I failed to mention in my agenda for political change was Brexit and all its disastrous  consequences. In our islands’ history Brexit has got to be the most stupid collective decision we’ve ever made, in large part an act of profound ignorance, xenophobia and self interested Tory/UK leadership.

On September 10th there will be hundreds of thousand of Britons on the streets of London urging us as a nation to reverse Brexit. I suspect that given another Referendum a majority of people would determine to reverse the decision and sign up for renewed European Union membership.

I am not and will never be a Tory. Nor am I enamoured for the Prime Minister to be chosen by .03 % of the electorate and neither am I that impressed by the choice.

But as an outsider I’m alarmed by Liz Truss’s apparent lead in the leadership polls.

Finally, the Tories are talking up privatising Channel 4 and interfering with the BBC’s independence. Let me be clear about this issue.

Any moves by their government to interfere with the tele visual media will be met by thousands of non-Conservatives flooding the streets in vigorous protest.

The Tories already have more than enough control over the printed press. Britain’s politics is riven with division.

There’s much more to come in the next two years. What was it that Oliver Cromwell said about ‘ politics being a substitute for civil war?!?’
