A DISTRAUGHT couple are smiling once again after a metal detectorist came to the rescue and found their wedding ring on a beach weeks after it was lost.
Stephen and Annie Todd from Dorchester, who have been married for nearly 48 years, were heartbroken when Stephen’s wedding ring was lost at Ringstead Bay.
Stephen had handed his ring to Annie for safe keeping as she paddled on the shoreline while he went for swim in the sea. Once out of the water and returning to their towels they realised with horror that the ring was missing.
After a frantic search and having no luck finding it themselves, Stephen reached out to Weymouth and Portland Metal Detecting Club for help - and metal detectorist Keith Brown came to the rescue.

Keith Brown said: “Steve and Annie were distraught and told me that the wedding ring held massive sentimental value to them both, I just knew I had to try and help. On August 31 during low tide and almost three weeks after the ring was lost, Steve and I returned to the spot the ring had been lost so I could search with my metal detector.
“After and hour of searching there was no trace of the ring, so I decided to extend the search area towards the sea and within a couple of minutes, bingo! My detector found a target and it was a sweet sounding signal. The target was six inches deep, as it had worked its way through the gaps in the larger rocks and was under shale.

“And there it was, I’d found it! The gold ring shone in the sunshine as I held it up to Steve. He was ecstatic and I must admit I was grinning from ear to ear. People who had been watching nearby were clearly delighted when they saw I had found the ring and there were smiles all round.
“When Steve phoned his wife I could hear the emotion in her voice. It was so satisfying that I was able to reunite Steve and Annie with something so precious and personal to them both that they thought was lost forever.”
